Berlatihlah, Melakukan Simulasi adalah bentuk kesiapan

Pernahkah melihat satu kompi pasukan polisi huru-hara melakukan simulasi pengamanan pemilukada ataupun sejenisnya.

Tornadoes are known as one of the most damaging disasters.  A tornado is a very powerful column of winds which spirals around a center of low atmospheric pressure. A tornado will look like a large black funnel which hangs down from a storm cloud. The name "tornado" derives from the Latin "tonare". It means "to thunder." While the Spanish developed the word into "tornear" which means "to turn or twist". This is why a tornado is sometimes called twister or cyclone. The winds inside a twister can spin around at speeds up to 500 miles an hour, but it usually travels at roughly 300 miles an hour. This speed twisting makes a tornado the most dangerous storm

On December 27,1831, 22 years old Charles Darwin joined the crew of the HMS Beagle as a naturalist. The five years expedition collected hydro graphic, geologic, and meteorologic data from South America and many other regions around the world. Darwin's own observation on this voyage led to his theory of natural selection. Charles Darwin was greatly influenced by the geologist Adam Sedgwick and naturalist John Henslow in his development of the theory of natural selection, which was to become the foundation concept supporting the theory of evolution. Darwin's theory holds that environmental effects lead to varying degrees of reproductive success in individuals and groups of organisms. Influenza, commonly known as "the flu", is an infectious disease caused by the influenza virus. Symptoms can be mild to severe. The most common symptoms include: a high fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pains, headache, coughing, and feeling tired. These symptoms typically begin two days after exposure to the virus and most last less than a week. The cough; however, may last for more than two weeks. In children there may be nausea and vomiting but these are not common in adults. Nausea and vomiting occur more commonly in the unrelated infection gastroenteritis, which is sometimes inaccurately referred to as "stomach flu" or "24-hour flu". Complications of influenza may include viral pneumonia, secondary bacterial pneumonia, sinus infections, and worsening of previous health problems such as asthma or heart failure. Influenza spreads around the world in a yearly outbreak, resulting in about three to five million cases of severe illness and about 250,000 to 500,000 deaths. In the Northern and Southern parts of the world outbreaks occur mainly in winter while in areas around the equator outbreaks may occur at any time of the year. Nuclear power is generated by using uranium which is a metal mined in various part of the world. The first large scale of nuclear power station was opened at Calder Hall in Cumbria, England in 1956.
Some military ships and submarines have nuclear power plant for engine. Nuclear power produces around 11% of the world's energy needed, and produces huge amounts of energy. It causes no pollution as we would get when burning fossil fuels. The advantages of nuclear plant are: It costs about the same coal, so it is not expensive to make. It does not produce smoke or carbon dioxide, so it does not contribute to the greenhouse effect. It produces huge amounts of energy from small amount of uranium. It produces small amount of waste. It is reliable. On the other hand, nuclear power is very, very dangerous. It must be sealed up and buried for many years to allow the radioactivity to die away. Furthermore, although it is reliable, a lot of money has to be spent on safety because if it does go wrong, a nuclear accident can be a major accident. People are increasingly concerned about this matter. In the 1990's nuclear power was the fastest growing source of power in many parts of the world.
39. How energy is used to make nuclear power?
A. Coal
B. Fossil
C. Nuclear
D. Uranium
E. Carbon dioxide

40. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Nuclear power produces the world's energy.
B. Nuclear produces huge amounts of energy.
C. Nuclear power gives many advantages.
D. Nuclear produces strong energy.
E. Nuclear power is reliable.

41. Which of the following is not related to the text?

The following text is for questions 43 to 45.
After my damning review of Eclipse, I’m sure you must have guessed that I didn’t hold out much hope for the finale of the Twilight saga, Breaking Dawn. Eclipse would have been a decent book as a standalone, but in the context of being the third book in a good series it should have offered a lot more. Thankfully, Breaking Dawn is of the quality that we expected after Twilight and New Moon. The book is written in three parts, the first and final part of which is from Bella’s point of view, as were the first three books in the saga. The middle part is Jacob Blacks point of view of the problem created in the first part. It is an interesting narrative, and the author pulled this off pretty well. The one downside of this was that her writing as Jacob was still a little reminiscent of a teenage girl, rather than a testosterone filled male werewolf. On honeymoon in Brazil, Bella and Edward consummate the marriage which begins the book. Bella begins to notice her body changing and they realise it is an over-accelerated pregnancy. The baby, which is half-vampire half-human, is threatening to destroy its mother, Bella. Breaking Dawn offers more than Eclipse but the story becomes a little predictable. It is a fine ending to a decent saga, but if Stephenie Meyer doesn’t want to run the series into the ground she won’t bother writing any prequel/sequel/parallel stories in the Twilight saga, because with each book they all got a bit repetitive. As a standalone book, it was an easy read and full of the twists and turns we have seen Meyer pull off in the saga. As the fourth book in the Twilight series it was a fitting finale. The twi-hards (twilight fanatics) will undoubtedly be happy with the way the book ends, but for fantasy readers who are less tolerant of the clichéd stories and fairytale-esque approach, nothing will particularly come as a surprise. Breaking Dawn is a must-read if you have started the series and want to see the story through.

The Sears Tower, a skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois, has been the tallest building in North America since 1973. It surpassed the World Trade Center, which itself had surpassed the Empire State Building only a year earlier. Commissioned by Sears, Roebuck and Company, it was designed by chief architect Bruce Graham and structural engineer Fazlur Khan of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill.  Construction commenced in August 1970 and the building reached its originally anticipated maximum height on May 3, 1973. When completed, the Sears Tower had overtaken the World Trade Center in New York City as the world's tallest building. The tower has 108 stories as counted by standard methods, though the building owners count the main roof as 109 and the mechanical penthouse roof as 110. The distance to the roof is 1,450.58 feet (442 m), measured from the east entrance.
In February 1982, two television antennas were added to the structure, increasing its total height to 1,707 feet (520 m). The western antenna was later extended to 1,730 feet (527 m)  on June 5, 2000 to improve reception of local NBC station WMAQ-TV.
Black bands appear on the tower around the 29th–32nd, 64th–65th, 88th–89th, and 104th–109th floors. These are louvers which allow ventilation for service equipment and obscure the structure's belt trusses which Sears Roebuck did not want to be visible as on the John Hancock Center. On August 12, 2007, the Burj Dubai in Dubai, United Arab Emirates was reported by its developers to have surpassed the Sears Tower in all height categories.

When traveling out of town, Jakartans are increasingly worried whether the main toll road to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is flooded, especially now at the height of the rainy season. It seems even a low-intensity rainstorm is enough to flood the city, including the airport toll road, especially when the Java Sea is seeing a high tide. Flooding on the Prof. Sediatmo turnpike -- the official name of the tollway to the airport -- is becoming a regular event for Jakartans.  Flooding on the Sediatmo toll road is bad, not only for Jakarta's economy, but also for the whole country. It is bad, especially, for Visit Indonesia Year 2008. Imagine, thousands of tourists lured by the Visit Indonesia campaign and flying to Indonesia via Soekarno-Hatta airport, and being greeted not by flowers but by floods. That would be a disaster for our tourism industry because word would spread that Indonesia is submerged and not worth visiting. Word of mouth is more powerful than any advertising campaign.

Pikiran utama
The second paragraph mainly tell about …
  1. the impacts of flooding on the toll road.
  2. the decline of tourism industry in Indonesia.
  3. the occurrence of natural disaster in Indonesia
  4. the effect of flooding on the toll road on tourism.
  5. the effect of flooding on the toll road on economy.
Once upon a time there was a stone cutter. The stone cutter lived in a land where a life of privilege meant being powerful. Looking at his life he decided that he was unsatisfied with the way things were and so he set out to become the most powerful thing in the land.
Looking around his land he wondered to himself what is it to be powerful. Looking up he saw the Sun shining down on all the land. "The Sun must be the most powerful thing that there is, for it shines down on all things, and all things grow from its touch." So he became the Sun.  Days later, as he shone his power down on the inhabitants of the land, there came a cloud which passed beneath him obstructing his brilliance. Frustrated he realized that the Sun was not the most powerful thing in the land, if a simple cloud could interrupt his greatness. So he became a cloud in fact, he became the most powerful storm that the world had ever seen. And so he blew his rain and lightning, and resounded with thunder all over the land, demonstrating that he was the most powerful. Until one day he came across a boulder.
Down and down he poured and his thunder roared, lightning flashed and filled the sky, striking the ground near the boulder. His winds blew and blew and blew, and yet, despite all his efforts, he could not budge the boulder.
Frustrated again, he realized that the storm was not the most powerful thing in the land; rather it must be the boulder. So he became the boulder. For days he sat, unmovable, and impassive, demonstrating his power, until one day, a stone cutter came and chiseled him to bits.

 Pesan Moral
What can we learn from the story?
  1. We should be thankful to what we have now.
  2. Working hard is a key for success.
  3. We should live in a simple way.
  4. Helping others is a good thing.
  5. It is better to do like others.

Drug abuse, also known as substance abuse, involves the repeated and excessive use of chemical substances to achieve a certain effect. These substances may be “street” or “illicit” drugs, illegal due to their high potential for addiction and abuse. They also may be drugs obtained with a prescription, used for pleasure rather than for medical reasons.
Different drugs have different effects. Some, such as cocaine or methamphetamine, may produce an intense “rush” and initial feelings of boundless energy. Others, such as heroin, benzodiazepines or the prescription oxycontin, may produce excessive feelings of relaxation and calm. What most drugs have in common, though, is overstimulation of the pleasure center of the brain. With time, the brain’s chemistry is actually altered to the point where not having the drug becomes extremely uncomfortable and even painful.  This compelling urge to use, addiction, becomes more and more powerful, disrupting work, relationships, and health.  What makes one person abuse drugs to the point of losing their home, their family and their job, while another does not? There is no one simple reason. Drug abuse and addiction is due to many factors. A powerful force in addiction is the inability to self- soothe or get relief from untreated mental or physical pain. Without the self-resilience and support to handle stress, loneliness or depression, drugs can be a tempting way to deal with the situation. Unfortunately, due to the changes drugs make to the brain, it can only take a few times or even one time to be on the road to addiction.

 Perbandingan paragraph
How do you compare the first and the third paragraphs?
A.    The first paragraph tells the definition and the third tells the reason of drug abuse
B.     The first paragraph tells the reason and the third tells the effect of drug abuse.
C.     Both paragraphs tell the people who involve in drug abuse.
D.    Both paragraphs tell the danger of drug abuse.
E.     Both paragraphs tell the effect of drug abuse.

This is Good, and Always Good

This is Good
An old story is told of  a king in Africa who had a close friend with whom he grew up. The friend had a habit of looking at every situation that ever occurred in his life (positive or negative) and remarking, "This is a good". One day the king and his friend were out on a hunting  expedition. The friend would load and prepare the guns for the king. The friend had apparently done something wrong in preparing one of the guns, for after taking the gun from his friend, the king fired it and his thumb was blown off. Examining this situation the friend remarked as usual, "This is good!" To which the king replied, "No, this is NOT good!" and proceeded to send his friend to jail.
About a year later, the king was hunting in an area that he should have known to sty clear of. Cannibals captured him and took him to their village. They tied his hands, stacked some wood, set up a stake and bound him to the stake. As they came near to set fire to the wood, they noticed that the king was missing a thumb. Being superstitious, they never ate anyone that was less than whole. So untying the king, they sent him on his way.
As he returned home, he was reminded of the event that had taken his thumb and felt remorse for his treatment of his friend. He went immediately to the jail to speak with his friend. "You were right," he said, "it was good that my thumb was blown off." And he proceeded to tell his friend all that had just happened. "And so I am very sorry for sending you to jail for so long. It was bad for me to do this."
"No," his friend replied, "This is good!"

Story of Friendship this month

Once upon a time there was a man who liked hunting very much. He often went to the forest to hunt any animal he met.
One day he went hunting into the forest. He intended to shoot any animal he saw. He brought his gun with him. When he was searching for his prey, suddenly he saw a bird perching on a branch of a tree. It was a dove. When he was aiming his gun at the dove, suddenly an ant came and bit his foot. He was so startled that he didn't shoot the dove. It was safe and then flew away.
Several days later, the dove was flying over a lake. He saw an ant floating on the surface of the water. It was the ant that had saved the dove’s life from the hunter. The ant was almost drowned. The dove got an idea; he picked up a big leaf and dropped it onto the surface of the water near the ant. Luckily the ant could get on the leaf.

The ant tried to bring the leaf to the edge of the lake and landed on the ground. The ant was safe because the dove helped him.
